What to Know About Lead Lined Doors and Frames
When it comes to radiation protection, especially in nuclear medicine facilities, lead lined hollow metal frames and doors are the only logical choice for a very good reason. X-rays and gamma rays, like any part of the light spectrum, interact with matter. Interaction with the human body in any but the smallest amounts is dangerous and lethal in cases of high, prolonged, or repeated exposure.
Because of its density, it takes a relatively small amount of lead to provide almost total protection from x-ray and gamma ray exposure, which is why it is widely used in hospitals and nuclear power facilities. Other materials, such as concrete and iron, also provide protection, but must be used in far greater amounts due to materials being less dense.
Because of how these rays interact with lead, as little as 1/32 of an inch can provide total protection in many environments, and 1/4 inch shielding is virtually impenetrable. When x-rays and gamma rays hit electrons in lead, the rays are essentially absorbed and the energy is released as heat, which dissipates harmlessly throughout the shielding.
At National Custom Hollow Metal Doors and Frames, we build custom doors and frames for many applications, and our TrustShield brand of lead-lined hollow metal doors meet the most rigid industry requirements for radiation protection. Whether you need standard sized doors and frames or custom sizes up to 5’ x 12’.
Our doors are also available with fire rating labels up to 90 minutes from Warnock-Hersey and if you need your doors fast, NCHM has the shortest lead times in the industry. The fire label can be with 16, 14, or 12 gauge material in galvanneal or stainless steel with doors 1 ¾” or 1 3/8” thick.
In fact, our standard lead time (“Quik Ship) of 15 working days would be considered a “rush” order at most manufacturers, if not utterly impossible for them to fill. This would mean our Hot Rush order of 3 working days are unthinkable. And of course, if you need your order rushed through in as little as one day, only NCHM’s “Walk Thru” service can provide that.
No matter how quickly you need your order, NCHM builds every single door with the most uncompromising commitment to quality because that’s the only way we know to do business.
