How do fire doors work?

During a fire, the doors compartmentalize the affected area and isolate the smoke and flames, so that occupants will have the time that they need to evacuate.

What fire door labels will I need?

Fire door labeling refers to the length of time that a door can keep an area compartmentalized from the spread of fire and smoke, with 20, 45, 90, and 180 minute labeling available. Labeling requirements are determined by the door’s location in a building. For example, a door that connects two separate buildings will usually require a 180 minute label, stairwells and elevator shafts usually require 90 minute labels, and interior corridor doors will typically require 60, 45, or 20 minute labeling. Door hardware such as latches, hinges, closing devices, panic hardware, and hold open devices are also rated, and you’ll need hardware that at least equals the door’s labeling, and the door and hardware ratings must not exceed the rating of adjacent walls.
